if you knew how the current NZ prime minister has been following orders from American corporations and Obama...it's extremely shockingly corrupt...but hay they "legalised" those used to be illegal, deregulate those used to be regulated...therefore their corruptions are well covered by new system (copying American way in politics)...while so many New Zealanders still believe Corruption problems only exist in mostly developing and thrid world countries...I was often speechless when I saw such naivity...Sigh! btw, taa /tpa didn't pass which stale TPP, i pray for it to fail to pass again on Jul16...
The forces behind TPP are immensely powerful, and I won't be surprised if they succeed in bulldozing all oppositions.
The US has been exporting corruption to the Western world for over half a century. For example, the French banking industry used to be run like the Chinese one, i.e. focused on serving the real economy. Not any more, it was deregulated in 1960's after intense lobbying. Not even General de Gaulle could stop the deregulation.

Fruther more, for someone used to work for big bank in wall street...how could he possibly not have a different or negative view towards American political /financial systems as once were an insider..when so many in the world have witnessed how corrupt they are... unless we all turn our blind eyes to what US govt did/does... It's very important to let some people know the truth and reality of USA, instead of letting their propoganda mislead many "outsiders" who believe all is wonderful and perfect in U.S. where any immigrant has good chance of realizing their American dreams...just like so many Taiwanese who still believe NZ is a paradise...
Seriously, Kiwis are not nearly as brain-dead as Americans, are they? I have always thought that NZ hasn't fallen as far as the other English speaking countries, but perhaps distance colored my view.

I kept forgetting to ask you this; a book I real last year called Flash boys-wall street revolt which tells the chilling story about how US share market being rigged for insiders proftis; basically almost all investors (many non-Americans ) got ripped off ...another example to show how corrupt the system is...I don't have enough vocab to read very serious books so only easy to read books like this I would read...this book is scary though...in my view. Yes, mailand Chinese were pretty screwed and have lost incredibly large amount of money as a country already...from foreign inverstments/ hot money flown in and out/ foreign exahange & currencies war/traps etc...if only the whole world can stop Only believing in USD...hopefully not too far away in the future USD's monapoly will weaken...then a better world I believe
This was my specialty, so I can tell you without reservation that the reality is a lot worse than any book can describe. One of the traders called it "cluster-fuck", which is basically what every Wall Street bank or fund tries to do to its clients.

The current NZ National govt is dumbing down the country fast n acts like a puppet controlled by American businesses and US govt...our tax dollars are being used as their ATM (like Taiwan) to subsidise American wars in foreign countries and mainly American businesses (already happened , and will be so much worse once TPP signed) ...they love easily brained washed people which support the established authority even when they were so crewed by bad policies. anyway, the weak or/and corrupt govts ( NZ, TWN and many more) will almost always surrender to US and sell their own country off/out... The current NZ PM is trying everything he can to Americanized NZ...many Kiwis are fighting against this, but we are not winning...well super long story and I can talk all day...not here though... thank you for asking. btw, maybe 50% of people on the street in NZ if asked by the same question, will agree with bombing Mosco...not yet 90%, but it's moving that way faster than I love to admit
The reason why China becomes such a big threat to American hegemony is exactly that it refuses to be exploited.

to previous comment -The best contribution for immigrants is to become a good citizen with both intelligence and conscience. - Harvard is most famous and most proud of "producing" the graduates with the ability of independant (if not critical) thinking - Harvard is a great school because of students like those with such ability; being accepted by Harvard usually is because you are outstanding. Harvord is not giving those outstanding individuals favours...(except for some students with rich parents who donate heaps, then exchange favours) - Without people like Mr Wang; USA will selfdestruct in no time (while it might also bring the rest of the world down with it) - Many more American citizens who were born and bred in U.S. and they still voice their disapporvals towards govt's bad policies either domestically or internationally
- Mr Wang doesn't "spread" negative comments about U.S.; he didn't invent the facts and truths about some horrible things US govt did, plenty of old files/papers/media reports (with conscience and independant views ) have written plenty to inform the public. Mr. Wang quoted and analysised and expressed his well analytical views.
- When citizen (including immigrants) are against govt's bad policies; it doesn't mean they don't love the country or the people (ok can't possibly love all of them, there are always some evil ones)...On the contrary, Mr wang might be one of those who love and care about their countries most
- I myself have been an anti govt activist in NZ for some years; I love NZ so much that I can't bear watching it go down to the shit hole environmentally and economically... -Lastly I like your writing about Taiwanese predential election in another blog
His tone indicates that he is immune to reason and logic, so I'm afraid you are wasting your time trying to reason with him. But I appreciate your efforts nonetheless.

Wow, Jack, you have a PhD of particle physics from Harvard and you were a Wall Street banker! It is impressive I must say. I will be more respective next time. Please tell us more about your personal stories. For example, the US of A offered you an opportunity to study at Harvard and you later worked at Wall Street. I would think that you should have become a “model immigrant”. Instead, you frequently spread anti-American views in your blog. I must say this can only happen in the US of A.
Oh, I was hired to perform a duty which I did better than anyone else, not to sell my conscience. Do you understand what the word "truth" means? Did you ever have a conscience in your life? Your logic is that taking a job in the US means the person has to cheer all the killing/lying/robbing done by the American government. That is called selling one's soul. It appears that your soul is not only for sale but also pretty cheap. Mine isn't.
Lecture 1: The theoretical foundation of democratic system and free economy
Lecture 2 : What does economic development need, freedom or rationality?

i watched Her last night; it's an interesting movie ( although a bit weird in my view too)...Shanghai (part of?) is so modern, but no blue sky either. and I wonder how people have caught up with the speedy "hardware" progress...? will definitely like to visit there some day. Thanks for mentioning this movie in your article.
It is a good movie and showcases Shanghai in a very flattering light.

any chance we will be able to watch/listen to your talks on line? (ok if it's not real time)

my question might not be relevant to this article but I am very curious about your view... I don't read/watch news often but from time to time i heard about What Chinese has bought American businesses for sky high prices (in my view they are totally being overpriced to fool Chinese buyers...) one was Forbes magazine (what an idiotic buy in my view), another i heard today is Waldorf-astoria hotel where UN agm traditionally held...and UN changes the venue this year because of Chinese ownership...I feel Chinese govt/business are overly naive about what their big money can buy...and the overrated benefits come with those purchases...I am curious about how many other "shoppings" Chinese did in recent years... How to spend wisely with their aquired fortune during last two decades; economic reform (with huge sacrifices too like air quality is one of them) is much harder to learn...than making money
It's a big country with a lot of private money. We cannot expect everyone to use his/her wealth wisely.
The local stock market was allowed to run up exactly for the purpose of avoiding big unwise outflow.
just read that US Senate approved TWN to join American's regular military exercise " Red Flag"...Another attempt for U.S. to create / increase unnecessary tension between ROC and PRC...it definitely will be a good excuse to ask Taiwan to waste billions on buying more "defensive" weapons from U.S....U.S. govt has no intention of achieving world peace, all they did was to create more troubles to this world... it's the tens of thousands (more like millions?) of people in many other countries who will pay the huge price for those conflicts...Do Taiwanese really want to become Pao4-hwei1 while U.S. govt/ corps profit from it? Hope Not!
Taiwanese political class is super-naive about the US. I am trying hard to change that.

to frances.
To Just me I think the ideal applies decades ago in U,S. When the inequality problem is so bad, and the real democracy compromised, and too much corruptions in the current systems...Not everyone has a chance...those previledged ones have much bigger and fatter chance and those in the bottom of the society/the under privileged ones have hardly any chance if not being screwed to death... I feel you don't seem to want to see the real U.S. beecause most likely you are one of those elites on upper level...
a few days ago when i was buying my take away meal from a local fish and chips shop, the cook behind the counter asked me if he should invest in share market in China ( I'm the last person he should ask such question but obviously he didn't know)...his urnest desire of making quick money reminded me of many friends of mine in Taiwan during those few years before the share market crash...when house wives even grandmas played such money games carrying their shopping baskets...and the history repeats itself cross the strait, even overseas Chinese want to build their get rich dreams back in their home country. My advice to him was small investors usually are those ones lose in the end...if he can't resist the tempetation, only use the money he can afford to lose without affecting his life style...he then sid maybe he should invest in property...i didn't want to encourage him to do this either (NZ property market has been totally overheated in recent years-and you know who those buyers are (buyers from Mainland China)...sorry back to the point, what's your view on the Chinese share market's short term future? bubble bursted foreseeable?
I think the Chinese government is facing two forces of drawing capital overseas: the first is the US Fed stopping QE, thus reversing the dollar flow; the second is the Chinese property market, whose bubble was recently deflated, releasing a tremendous amount of idle capital. The People's Bank wants to keep the majority of these idle capital in the country, so the stock market is allowed to absorb them.
It makes no sense to grow another bubble, but the market should not be allowed to crash either. The People's Bank will let it run within a very wide band. I do agree with you that the small foreign investors should keep clear.

forgot to mention; is it possible for you to schedule your future visit to TWN (for giving talks /holding siminars) well before hand i.e. twice a year in Jan , July ...or any other month...so some of us will be able to plan our visit there too when possible...love to be able to see /listen to your speeches. just an idea
This is very flattering. Unfortunately, my host and I don't usually plan that far ahead, but we might do this lecture series again next year. If that is the case, it will be in the same time frame, i.e. mid-June.
但文中这句'it(SBIA-managed affiliate fund) stood to lose potential gains if Wirecard went bankcrupt' 让我很不解。
